Step into Tech - Tech Upskill Programme for York Students and Graduates

The University of York is running a free online ‘Step into Tech’ programme for students and graduates from diverse backgrounds who have studied any degree outside of computer science. The programme runs flexibly over eight weeks, requiring between ten to fifteen hours per week of engagement; combining online self study and interaction with others.
The aim of the programme is to explore different aspects of careers in technology, in a safe environment.
As well as developing beginner level coding capabilities and understandings, aims of the programme are to:
- provide an insight and understanding of the tech industry; the range and depth of career roles in the technology sector
- to support you in understanding which areas of tech might meet your interests, skills, strengths and personality.
You will receive support from employers, tech professionals, careers information and professional coaches; helping you to identify your best next steps.
How to apply
We would love to accept all applications for this programme however there is limited availability for places and therefore we have to use an application process. There are three application questions as part of this form and for each we would like a 200 word answer. Please answer these questions honestly and specifically. This programme is for students and graduates who are interested in technology but new to the skills and knowledge of that sector. It is not therefore expected that you will have an existing knowledge of coding or software but you will certainly want to learn more. You will need to demonstrate that you are committed to completing the full programme and show why you are keen to dedicate your time over eight weeks to achieving this.
The programme begins on Monday 31st July 2023 and will finish on Sunday 24th September 2023.
Please make sure you are available for the programme launch session on Monday 31st July, 6 to 7.30pm via Zoom AND at least one of the following days and times every week throughout the programme for live online practicals:
- Wednesday 12 - 2pm; or
- Wednesday 4 - 6pm; or
- Wednesday 6 - 8pm
And office hours will be at the following days and times for questions and extra support:
- Tuesday 4 - 6pm
- Thursday 5 -7pm
- Friday 12 - 2pm
