York Internships, University of York

Communications and Events Intern

August - September 2022 • York, England

What I liked

I really liked the mix between In person & Remote work, enabling flexible working. The fact I had project goals enabled me to set timely aims to achieve each week. Working with the Halifax / Wentworth Team allowed me to learn much more about the college system and Postgrads enabling me to be successful in other Uni roles. I liked being able to learn new technologies from this role (Eventbrite, Canva, Mailjet, Bit.ly)

What I wish was different

There were not many set deadlines which made setting my own goals more important, but made starting a little difficult. If it was a week longer it would allow me to really see the impact of the work and support Halifax during Fresher's week, which would be an unique opportunity.

Advice

Ask Questions! Take the most out of any job role and learn from the more experienced staff. Make suggestions! You can have a real impact by incorporating your own ideas. Even the discussions can be rewarding even if they are not followed up with.

Project Assistant Intern

July 2022 • York, England

What I liked

My internship with Inclusive Learning enabled me to get involved with a project that tends to improve students’ experience and make a difference in the community of which I am also a part. Moreover, it gave me an opportunity to directly work with University staff and members, which I see as a very rewarding addition to my overall University experience. A day in life interning with the toolkit team was dynamic and it included different modes of working and opportunities to participate in the workplace. During my internship, I enjoyed a welcoming working environment the most because I think that is an essential factor for productivity. Throughout my internship, I was also looking forward to the outcomes because I think that the recommendations and resources that we have gathered will make a change in students' well-being and education experience. Moreover, this internship gave me the opportunity to strengthen many valuable transferable skills that I can certainly use in my future career. It helped me to hone my research skills as it was heavily based on the desk-based research that was needed in order to review and further develop new resources.

Advice

Having an internship just before going into my third year of undergraduate study is certainly a valuable experience, as I can reflect on and acknowledge both my strengths and places for improvement, so that I can make a more grounded decision at the end of the next academic year.
